Geçen hafta Art Institute of Chicago’da iki fotoğraf sergisi gördüm.
İlki Henri Cartier-Bresson fotoğraflarıyla Andre Lhote’un çizimlerini bir arada sunup aralarında parallelikler kuruyordu.
Diğeri ulusal kimlikle ilişkili fotoğrafları bir araya getiriyordu. Bu sergi sayesinde Robert Frank’la tanışmış oldum. Robert Frank 1950’lerin Amerika’sını eleştirel bir bakışla fotoğraflamış ve bu fotoğraflarnı The Americans adlı kitapta bir araya getirmiş. Hala eleştiriye tahammül etmekte zorlanılan bu zaman ve dünyada Frank’tan alıntılanan şu söz çok anlamlıydı: “Düşünce çoğunlukla eleştiriyi içerir. Fakat eleştiri sevgiden de doğabilir.”

I have been to two photo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago last week.
The fırst was quite interesting in presenting photographs of Henri Cartier-Bresson together with paintings of Andre Lhote, and drawing parallels among them.
The other brought together photographs related to national identity. This exhibition introduced Robert Frank to me. Robert Frank photographed the United States in 1950s from a critical perspective and collected his photos in a book called The Americans. In our age and world where criticism is still not tolerated, the following quote from Frank was very meaningful: “Opinion often consists of a kind of criticism. But criticism can come out of love.”
